Thursday Workshop – FINDING AND WORKING WITH YOUR PERFECT AGENT
Joyce Sweeney has seen the agent world from both sides – as a client and now as an agent. She has learned a lot! In this all day workshop we will sharpen your skills for finding the right agents to submit to, we’ll work on your query, your synopsis and other tools that are great to have, and help you sort through your projects to find the best one to lead off with.

- Overview of what I’ve learned from being on the agent side of the desk, how agents select clients, common mistakes, added bonuses and how to find someone who is really compatible with you for a good future relationship.
- Tools – We will work on your query and synopsis, what to include when pitching to an agent and how your social media and public presence affects an agent’s choices.
- Pitching in person – we will practice on the spot and evaluate how well we speak about our projects and ourselves.
- Agent searching – what tools work best for finding your true match.
- Q and A if time.
Your workshop fee is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Proceeds support the Florida Writers Foundation, Inc. (FWF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation formed to promote literacy and enhance the writing skills of children, youth, and adults.
Joyce Sweeney is the author of fourteen novels for young adults and two chapbooks of poetry. Her first novel, Center Line, won the First Annual Delacorte Press Prize for an Outstanding Young Adult Novel. Many of her books appear on the American Library Association’s Best Books List and Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers. Her novel Shadow won the Nevada State Reading Award in 1997. Her novel Players was chosen by Booklist as a Top Ten Sports Book and by Working Mother magazine as a Top Ten for Tweens. Her novel, Headlock (Holt 2006), won a Silver Medal in the 2006 Florida Book Awards and was chosen by the American Library Association as a Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers.
Her first chapbook of poems, IMPERMANENCE, was published in 2008 by Finishing Line Press, her second, entitled WAKE UP was also released by the same publisher.. She has had numerous poems, short stories, articles and interviews published; and her play, FIRST PAGE CRITIQUES was produced in 2011. Joyce has recently switched to writing adult fiction and is represented by Nicole Resciniti of the Seymour agency.
Joyce has also been a writing teacher and coach for 25 years, beginning with teaching five-week classes for the Florida Center for the Book, moving to ongoing invitation only workshops and finally to online classes (www.sweeneywritingcoach.com) which reach students nationally and internationally. Developing strong bonds with the students she critiques and instructs is her hallmark. She believes that writers need emotional support as well as strong, craft-based teaching if they are to make the long, arduous, but very worthwhile journey to traditional publication. At this writing, 64 of Joyce’s students have successfully made this journey and obtained traditional publishing contracts.
Joyce was a founding member, producer and director for The Playgroup llc, from 2011-2019. The group worked with South Florida Playwrights to bring original plays to the stage. Joyce also has served for the past five years as a judge for the Carbonell Awards for excellence in local theater.
In 2020, Joyce joined The Seymour Agency as an agent representing picture books and middle grade fiction and non-fiction.
Joyce lives in Coral Springs with her husband, Jay and caffeine-addicted cat, Nitro.
